[London, 1837]. - Charles Green was the most celebrated British balloonist of the nineteenth century and was the first person to make an ascent (in 1821) in a balloon filled with coal gas. In 1836 he made a celebrated and record-breaking flight from Vauxhall Gardens, across the English Channel and landing at Weilburg in Nassau, Germany, giving rise to the name of the 'Royal Nassau Balloon'. In this 1837 double ascent, his own balloon was piloted by his wife. In Green's long career he made over 500 ascents and had several lucky escapes.
