Pride and Prejudice: A Novel. In three volumes. By the author of "Sense and Sensibility."
London: for T. Egerton, 1813 - 3 volumes, duodecimo (173 × 115 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked, rear endpaper in vol. I replaced to style. Housed in a brown cloth slipcase by the Chelsea Bindery. Boards lightly rubbed, last leaf (P2) of vol. I with small marginal repair, horizontal closed tears to I9-10, vol. II, some spotting as usual, a good copy. Without half-titles. Second edition. Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet 21, the same age, in fact, as her fictional heroine Elizabeth Bennet. After an early rejection by the publisher Cadell, Austen's novel was finally bought by Egerton in 1812 for £110. It was published in late January 1813 in a small edition of approximately 1,500 copies. The present second edition is thought to have been published in October that same year. Gilson A4; Keynes 4.
