The Art of the Poster. Its Origin, Evolution & Purpose.
London Cecil Palmer 1924 - Quarto. xii, 190pp. Presentation copy with a manuscript letter laid in from the author to Frank Pick, the dedicatee. The book was given as a gift on the day before its official publication. While serving as Managing Director of the London Underground, Frank Pick revolutionized the corporation's visual brand. He commissioned both established and rising contemporary artists to create publicity posters that reflected his strong interest in modern art, architecture, and design. One of the first recruits, in 1915, was a young E. McKnight Kauffer, whose work incorporated bold elements of Cubuism and Futurism. In the letter, Kauffer thanks Pick for his encouragement and writes, "I am reminded of my timid entrance into your office some nine years ago and of the importance that interview was to my life's work. In dedicating this work to you I feel I have had one honour that I shall always regard with the greatest esteem." In the postscript, Kauffer asks if he can stop by the following week to show his completed posters for Winter Sales and the Aquarium. In the years following his first commission, Kauffer became one of the leading and most prolific poster artists of the 1920s and 30s. The letter notes that the book was given as a gift on the day before its official publication, and it bears the date stamp of Pick's office in the lower left corner. The book itself is a valuable resource on the history of poster art, paying special attention to the role of posters in advertising. Illustrated throughout with numerous black & white and color plates. Some light foxing to letter, book shows some slight discoloration to covers, else a fine copy of notable provenance.
