A rich assemblage of the pioneering work of Paul, "typify[ing] the eighteenth-century justice at his best", all directed towards his longstanding efforts at prison reform as inspired by the works of Beccaria, Blackstone, Eden, Howard, and Montesquieu. Early speckled 1/2 calf over marbled boards, front board loose, once the copy of Henry Goulburn, twice Chancellor of the Exchequer, with his bookplate. Printed by D. Walker [etc.] [imprints vary], Glocester, 1785-1810.
