White -88 1787 - 2 vols., FIRST EDITION of the second, 38 hand-coloured engraved plates in the second vol., first vol. bound without the half-title (none called for in the second), the plates trimmed a bit close with the loss of the imprint to 5 of them but without serious loss to the images, occasional minor foxing or browning, pp. [xxv, the last not numbered], 500, [28]; vi,72,[2, ads], 8vo, uniform contemporary tree calf, spines gilt, black lettering pieces, numbered in gilt direct, cracks to joints but still solid, corners slightly worn, bookplate of [Sir] Percival Hart Dyke (5th or 6th Baronet) in both vols., good Only eight of the Letters here published are by Rousseau, what Martyn refers to as the ‘foundation’ in his Preface, the remainder being the ‘superstructure.’ ‘In 1788 the Letters were given further botanical value with the publication of Mertyn’s Thirty-eight plates’ (Henrey). The advertisements at the end of the plates volume are for books published by Benjamin White. The last item in the list, ‘In the press, and speedily will be Published’, is the publisher’s brother Gilbert’s Natural History of Selborne, which appeared the following year. (Henrey1282 and 1030)
