John B. McDonald Rapid Transit Subway Construction Co., New York City 1904 - A 'souvenir' of the dinner occasion, with list of guests at back including August Belmont, president of the Rapid Transit Construction Co., Wm. Barclay Parsons, William Bradley, John C. Rodgers, Frederic Tench, R.C. Hunt, Robert W. Lesley, Daniel F. McMahon, P.F. Murphy , R.A.C. Smith and a couple of dozen others who were involved in this massive transportation undertaking, the first subway built in New York City; illustrated throughout, with tipped-on photogravures printed on India paper, depicting in detail aspects of the engineering & building of this project; the first plate is a calligraphically written & printed presentation page, with the name of William Bradley written in - (this particular page printed by Dempsey & Carroll, N.Y., with their imprint at bottom); followed by a plate depicting the signing of the contract for the project, with a roomful of those concerned, with several facsimile signatures beneath and a portion of the relevant witnessing agreement; each following plate page with imagery of aspects of the construction and a portrait oval of one or more of the men concerned, surrounded by ornate pen & ink decorative flourishes and floral touches; pictures of street excavations and a final subway lobby; long views of the streets, workmen 'in the hole'; the depth of the project at Forty-Second street; Naughton & Co. construction below the Columbus statue; bridge engineering; tunnel structure arches, supports, waterside systems and steel underpinnings, boomwork, inner views of the tunnel prior to track laying; steel structures of elevated sections; men mining; United Building Material Col. yards and men placing underlay; a power plant; well-dressed worthies at the opening ceremonies; a plate depicting the plaque erected to commemorate the structure; and a list of the guests; the final plate is a seated portrait of John B. McDonald which is hand-signed beneath the gravure plate, "Very truly yours, John B. McDonald"; an impressive folio, in large oblong format, approx. 12" x 15 1/2" size; the images average about 7" x 8", some larger, some a little smaller; 20 pages, tipped-on one side only throughout, the India tissue tipped in four corners onto heavy, good quality paper stock backers; original full leather binding, a rich caramel-brown, with the name William Bradley in script on the front cover in silver-gray metal, applied via 'points' fastening to the leather; side-bound with leather strip; front (blank) endpaper with some offsetting from the name-pins; some light wear, rubbing, couple of spots to the binding, name-strip bent; contents including all gravures clean and in very good condition; John B.
