CHRYSAL: OR, THE ADVENTURES OF A GUINEA. WHEREIN ARE EXHIBITED VIEWS OF SEVERAL STRIKING SCENES, WITH CURIOUS AND INTERESTING ANECDOTES OF THE MOST NOTED PERSONS IN EVERY RANK OF LIFE, WHOSE HANDS IT PASSED THROUGH, IN AMERICA, ENGLAND, HOLLAND, GERMANY AND PORTUGAL ... By an Adept [pseudonym].
Dublin: Printed by Dillon Chamberlaine, in Smock-Alley, 1760. A guinea describes its various owners. Several chapters are devoted to an account of the Hellfire Club, and other material alludes in thinly disguised fashion to other events and personalities of the day. “The best scandalous chronicle of the day.” - DNB. The first instance of using an animated object as narrator to link disparate episodes, a narrative device that was subsequently popular for 150 years at least, especially in Britain. This text was revised for a second edition in 1761 and the novel was expanded by two volumes in 1765. 12mo, two volumes: pp. [i-ii] iii-xxiv [xxv-xxxvi] [1] 2-204; [i-xii] [1] 2-220, old full calf, red leather title pieces, volume numbers on spines stamped in gold. First Dublin edition. Block, p. 124. Tinker 1417. Small marginal stains to fore-edges of title leaf and contents pages of volume two, otherwise the pages of both volumes are clean, bindings worn at edges, a sound, good to very good copy. (#133082)
