[Portrait] Alexius Hubertus Iaillot ...
Culin / C.M.Vermeulen - Paris - - 30 x 37 - Uncoloured - A large and detailed portrait of Alexis Hubert Jaillot from the "Atlas Francois". Jaillot (c.1632-1712) was from Saint-Claude, Franche-Comte, and came to Paris in 1657. In 1664 he married Jeanne Berey, the daughter of Nicolas Berey, the map publisher, and following the death of his father-in-law and his brother-in-law (also Nicolas), the business passed to Jaillot and he was to gain access to much of the stock and also Berey's former shop, Aux Deux Globes. This was the start of a long and illustrious career for Jaillot in the map publishing business. This regal portrait shows the scholarly Jaillot with his right hand upon his "Atlas Gallicus" with further tomes and a globe in the background. This engraving by Cornelis Martinus Vermeulen is after a painting by Culin. One or two marginal nicks repaired and one old fold evident.
