Bookplate of Sir Thomas Baring (Probitate Et Labore -By honesty and toil) son of the founder of Baring's Bank (In 1802, Barings and Hope were called on to facilitate the largest land purchase in history - the Louisiana Purchase. Technically, the United States purchased Louisiana from Barings and Hope, not from Napoleon-Wikipedia) Three volumes in a contemporary dark tan leather binding with five gilt bands, maroon and brown title labels with gilt date (1811) and tooling to spines and gilt border to covers. Headbands and corners worn. Vol. II hinge tender, but holding.
