The Prose Works of . . . New and Revised Edition.
Boston: Fields, Osgood, 1870. 2 vols, 8vo, original blind-stamped green cloth, gilt lettering. Frontis portrait. Cloth a little rubbed and worn; very good copy, enclosed in a quarter morocco clamshell box. ¶ An important collection that brings together all of Emerson's essays, and a fine association copy: inscribed on the front blank of volume one to Irish poet “William Allingham, Esq. / With Thankful acknowledgment of long kindness / from R. W. Emerson / Oct. 30, 1869.” Below the inscription in pencil Allingham has noted “Emerson died quietly in his house at Concord / about 9 oclock in the evening of Thursday, April 27, 1882. A happy life & death.” Also on the frontis portrait, Allingham has written a note to the effect that the image is not a good resemblance of Emerson. Allingham carefully read this copy of Emerson's essays, as indicated by numerous small annotations in the margins in his hand. The date of the inscription, October 30, 1869, is the same date that Emerson inscribed a copy to Longfellow, now at Harvard, and it is the earliest recorded date that he inscribed copies. ¶ Later small booklabel on the front paste-down.
