The Wind in the Willows
Methuen and Co, London 1908 - The second edition, published in the same month as the first. The book is firmly and squarely bound in clean boards, lettered and decorated in gilt, the boards are clean and the gilt is bright, but the corners and spine ends are a little rubbed and bumped. The text block is slightly foxed and age toned and there is a neatly written gift inscription, dating from Christmas 1908. The dust jacket is the original and correctly priced at 7/6 NET, it is slightly age darkened, more so to the spine, with a few minor chips and short closed tears to the edges and one or two minor marks, but overall it has survived the last 106 years remarkably well. A beautifully preserved early example of this much loved title, in very similar format to the first edition, other than the price, which unusually increased from 6s to 7/6. Now of course the relationship has dramatically inverted, and to purchase a first edition in a dust jacket you would probably need to contemplate adding a zero to the price of this second edition!
