RELIQUIAE SACRAE CAROLINAE. Or THE WORKS OF THAT GREAT MONARCH AND GLORIOUS MARTYR KING CHARLES THE I
The Hague, printed by Samuell Browne, 1651.. Collected together, and digested in order, according to their severall subjects, civil and sacred. Contains in the first part Concerning matters civil, His Majesty's Speeches, His Majesty's Messages for Peace, Letters etc, and in the second part Concerning matters sacred, the Eikon Basilike with separate title page printed red and black dated 1649 and Papers about Church Government and His Majesty's Prayers plus things relating to his death. The title page of the Eikon Basilike reads: THE PORUTRAICTURE (sic) OF HIS SACRED MAJESTIE IN HIS SOLITUDES AND SUFFERINGS. Together with His Majesties Praiers delivered to Doctor Juxon immediately before his death. Also His Majesties reasons, against the pretended jurisdiction of the High Court of Justice, which he intended to deliver in writing on Monday January 22, 1648. Small 8vo, 170 x 110 mm, 6¾ x 4¼ inches, frontispiece of the King with globe, folding frontispiece to Eikon Basilike showing King kneeling with crown of thorns in his right hand both engraved by William Marshall, oval portrait of the Prince of Wales at page 213, pages: [16], 1- 276, [4], 1-247, 149-324 (the leap in pagination to page 149 for the Church Papers is recorded in the Contents section at the beginning of the book), LACKING THE EXPLANATION OF THE FRONTISPIECE AS OFTEN which should precede the folding frontispiece in the Eikon Basilike, a few mispaginations but text collated and guaranteed complete, bound in full antique leather, blind rules to covers, rebacked to style with raised bands and small gilt lozenge in 4 compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label. Covers worn with some pitting to surface, small repairs to lower corners, top corners slightly worn, pastedowns discoloured by glue, very faint browning to lower edge of frontispiece and general title page, offset from the front pastedown, sdmall repair to lower corner of front endpaper, another small lower corner torn off, 1 very small chip to an upper margin, 1 fore-edge margin slightly chipped due to paper flaw. Text block tight and firm. A very good clean copy complete with all required illustrations, but lacking Explanation as noted See Madan, A New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike, page 72 No. 62 with an illustration of our Eikon Basilike title page on page 73. Madan No. 62 collates almost as our copy except that there are 17 pages after the Eikon and before the Church Papers which are not called for in our Contents list. The title page of the Eikon has the same misprint 'Porutraicture' but differs very slightly from ours: it has red decoration to the corners and 'Eikon Basilike' and 'Majesties' are printed lower than they are in our copy. According to Madan the Explanation of the Frontispiece is often lacking from this edition. Madan examines the question of the authorship of the Eikon Basilike in detail and comes to the conclusion that both Charles I and John Gauden were involved, Charles in providing the original manuscript material, Gauden for writing it up and making a book of it (see Madan, Appendix 1, pages 126-133).
