The Church Bells of Cornwall: their archaeology and present condition
Printed for the Author, London 1878 - (viii); 94 pages. 3 full page plates showing 25 different bell marks. Half-title and final leaf slightly browned. Original brown cloth lettered on the spine and upper cover which has a central device of a bell in gilt, slightly bumped at the corners. A rare campanology title. In 1872 the author visited and ascended nearly all the church towers in the hundreds of Penwith, Kerrier, Powder, and Pyder to personally inspect the bells. Several towers in the eastern division were also visited, while others were visited two years later. The material obtained, the inscriptions, legends, initial crosses, and founders' marks, on 872 bells in Cornwall, besides copies of old belfry-rhymes, extracts from parish registers, etc, are all recorded in this work.
