How the Other Half Lives, Studies Among the Tenements of New York
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1890 - 8vo, pp vx, 304. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards, somewhat rubbed and scuffed, some small tears in the cloth at the spine ends. Small ownership stamp on front pastedown, otherwise clean and sound, complete with all illustrations. Very good. This groundbreaking work of early photojournalism documented the squalid living conditions and dangerous and exploitative working conditions of New York City slums in the 1880s. Riis's vivid descriptions, combined with sketches, photographs, and statistics, succeeded in arousing public outrage and sparking a decade of social reform. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
