In 2 Parts: (1) A short history of the rise, progress, and decay of the Commonwealth, and (2) A description of the city: an account of the religion, civil government, and art of war; with the remarkable customs and ceremonies, publick and private. Illustrated with 10 engraved plates (5 of which are foldouts). Index. 8vo., contemporary speckled calf; volume has been rebacked. 17th century ink notation to first leaf. Some scuffing and minor edgewear to boards; one small spot of worming to middle front board, else no sign of critter activity. Clean text; the bottom opening corner of one of the final blank leaves has been torn off. A very good copy of the author's first and best known work, which went through many editions up to 1820 and was the standard work on the subject for nearly a century. Rare. [Wing K298]
