The U.S. Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere, during the years 1849-'50-'51-'52 (Volumes 1, 2, 3 & 6 - A Complete Set)
A.O.P. Nicholson, Washington, DC 1855 - 1855-1856. Four volumes. Consisting of Volumes 1 (556 pp), 2 (300 pp), 3 (492 pp + 284 pp), and 6 (420 pp). This is the complete set as volumes 4 & 5 were never issued. All volumes complete with the maps and plates as issued. Volume 1 deals with Chile. Volume 2 contains supplementary reports including the nicely illustrated (colored lithographs) report on birds. Volume 3 is seldom seen. It contains a 284 page preface which is an extensive discussion on the origin and operations of the Expedition followed 492 pages containing sections on metrometrical observations taken from Santiago, Washington, DC, Cambridge, Mass and the Cape of Good Hope. Volume VI contains extensive tables of magnetical and metorological observations. Volumes 1 and 2 are bound in leather. Volume 3 is ex-library in a recent sturdy cloth type binding. Volume 4 is 1/4 leather with marbled boards. The contents of Volume 1 and 2 are very clean and bright. The paper in volume 3 is light tan and there are annotations ("Dup" and numbers) on the contents page but no other markings. In volume 6 the paper is dark tan paper which lightens towards the center. The covers of volumes 1, 2 & 6, have chipping at the head and foot of the spine, numerous stain areas, small tears and gouges. ~ Heavy set (22 lbs packed) and additional postage will apply.
