The Gentleman & Farmer's Pocket Assistant: Containing the most expeditious Method of ascertaining the Contents in Acres, &c. of any Farm, with An Appendix, Containing an Epitome of the Art of Land Surveying, drawn up, for the Use of his own Pupils, by J. Vaughan, Teacher of the English and Latin Tongues, Writing, Arithmetic, The Mathematics, &c. at Malpas, in Cheshire.
Shrewsbury: Printed and Sold by J. and W. Eddowes. Sold also by T. N. Longman. 1795 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small, square 12mo, 140 x 122 mms., (in 6s), pp. [ii], iv [v - xv list of subscribers, xvi blank], 151 [sic, for 115, 116 blank], 3 folding engraved plates at end, with adverts on the verso of the leaf preceding the title-page, uncut, original boards; first front free end-paper detached, front cover holding by two flimsy cords, covers worn, spine defective. With the contemporary inscription "Edward Evans/ Domengastell [i. e., Domen Gastell in Wales]" on the second front free end-paper. The subscribers include "Mr. John Price, Attorney, Oswestry." Vaughan seems to have been something of a polymath, and the advert opposite the title-page offers young gentlemen instruction in book-keeping, navigation, Greek and Latin, mathematics (as distinguished from arithmetic), and so forth. The preface extolls the usefulness of the book to gentlemen: "To the Gentlemen, this method may afford a new and healhtful amusement; as it may be an inducement to him to walk more into his fields, when he considers that measuring by the step may render a chain useless., and by a very little practice he will be able of adjusting his step to a yard." ESTC T119379 locates copies in BL and Bodleian; there is also a copy in NLS. No copies traced in North America. Given that there were over 150 subscribers to the book, there must be other surviving copies. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
