Thyra Varrick, A Love Story
Manuscript 1903 - This RARE origional manuscript by Amelia Edith Barr of "Thyra Varrick", published in 1903, is a romantic story of a betrothed lass and an equally betrothed soldier of Bonny Prince Charlie in the Highlands of the 18th century. Amelia Edith Barr was known as the pioneer of the American historical novel, wrote more than 70 books. At one time she was also a Secretary to Sam Houston, of Alamo fame. Her works were popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. Her best known work being "Remember The Alamo". She was also recognized as an active advocate for Woman's Rights. She died in 1919 at the age of 88 in Richmond Hill, N.Y., and was survived by three daughters, Mrs. Kirk Monroe, wife of the writer of popular stories for boys; Mrs. Edward Munroe, and Miss Alice Ellen Barr. The manuscript is on 8 ½ x 11 sheets of paper and is grouped into six sections attached by a clip in the upper right hand corner. The Dedication page, Title page, Index page and the Chapter Headings, on the Chapter Heading pages, are handwritten by Amelia Barr. The first few chapter pages are typescript with author's handwritten corrections up to part of Chapter IX (page 240), the remainder of the novel, to the end, the pages are handwritten by the author (part of page 240 to the last page 470. All page numbers in the upper right corner of each page are handwritten. The manuscript ["This Book"] is Inscribed by the author, "To My Dear Children, Mr. And Mrs. Edward A. Munro." RARE.
