Grenville M. Dodge, Montpelier, VT 1911 - These books belonged to the historian/author Dorothy Sutherland Melville and she has signed the ffep of volume I and identified herself there as granddaughter of Rev. Allan D. Brown, Commander U.S.N. (Ret.), president of Norwich University 1896-1904 and mother of Joseph Andrew Melville '51 and Royal Melville '55. there is laid in, a short, handwritten autobiography of Commander Brown identified as in his own hand. there is also a short, typewritten biography of Commander Brown and an excerpt the Vermont Historical Society "New and Notes" Sept., 1963 on Albert Sabin "A Norwich Cadet at Vicksburg" by David Sabin. Ms. Melville has added a few marginal notes in volume I. Some on page 229, about Capt. H. W. Hovey (prof. Military Science and Commandant 1902) where there is also laid in a hand written note from Carrie F. Hovey thanking Helen Tyler Brown for her sympathy with respect to Major Hovey's death. These books are clean, tight, square with sharp corners (but vol. I, lower rear bumped) and otherwise unmarked. They are illustrated with black & white photos. They have tan end papers and volume I has 604, volume II 772 and volume II 758, bright clear pages. They have one-quarter binding with maroon cloth and gold titles on the spine. The boards are covered with gold cloth with a university seal on the front. they are rubbed at the edges and will cost more to ship internationally. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
