The Naval Achievements of Great Britain from the year 1793-1817
Printed for J. Jenkins by L. Harrison, London 1817 - 2 volumes. large 4to., (14 2/8 x 11 4/8 inches). Uncoloured engraved vignette title-page in volume one, hand-colored engraved vignette title-page in volume II, and 55 fine hand-colored aquatint plates (one or two loose, some marginal spotting and thumbing). Original publisher's half morocco gilt with publisher's ticket on the front paste-down of each volume (worn at the extremities with loss, some surface tears). First edition, later issue with plates variously watermarked up to 1833. First issued in 1817, and subsequently to order. Illustrating the naval engagements between Great Britain and Denmark, Spain, France and the United States. Included are three plates depicting the battle of Trafalgar. "As a record of naval events spanning a period of over twenty years Jenkins' "Naval Achievements" has no precedent. At no time prior to 1817 had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval prints. It is the quality of the accuracy which makes Jenkins so valuable above all, and it is the pictures rather than the text to which the value can be attributed." Roger Quarm of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England.
