Texas
Lexington, KY: J. Clarke, 1836. 12mo., (7 x 4 4/8 inches). Folding engraved map of Texas (11 4/8 x 14 4/8 inches) (early tape repair near the gutter) (spotting throughout). Original publisher's blue cloth titled in gilt on the spine (extremities just touched, endpapers renewed). Holley's first book entitled "Texas", published in 1833, was the first book written in English about Texas. The present work, published three years later, was substantially rewritten and is essentially a different book, and in Jenkins's view: "a much more important book, and had considerably more influence than her earlier work. In addition to the San Jacinto reports, it includes the first book printing of the Texas Declaration of Independence, of the Republic of Texas Constitution, of Travis' famous letter from the Alamo, of Austin's Louisville Address of 1836, and other key documents of the revolution. It includes the full text of the Mexican Constitution of 1824 and translations of the colonization laws, as well as chapters on money and banking, the mails, trade, natural history, society and manners, religion and Indians. It includes the best physical description of Texas up to that time, and a clear and concise analysis of the colonization and land grant system and of Austin's colonization activities" (Jenkins). There is much practical information for emigrants to Texas, and also an account of Stephen Austin's farewell address. Though Austin arranged for a land grant in Galveston for Holley, she never was able to raise enough money to move there permanently, though her book became a practical guide to many who did make the move. Graff 1935. Howes H593. Jenkins, "Basic Texas Books" 94.. Rader 19n; Streeter.
