A Treatise of the Five Orders of Columns in Architecture. To Which is Annex’d, A Discourse Concerning Pilasters. Made English by John James of Greenwich
Printed for John Senex, London 1726 - Elephant folio. [8], XII, XXI, [3], 131, [1], [4]pp. Original calf expertly rebacked, with blind-stamped tooling on covers and gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. Gold tooling along edges. Title page with vignette. Additional engraved dedication page. In his Treatise of the Five Orders (first published in 1676) Perrault attacked the theories of proportion of antiquity. By drawing lucid distinctions between things of absolute and relative beauty, he shook to the foundations the authority of classical antiquity and opened the way for modern values. The Colonnade showed his aversion to both the frozen formulas of the academic tradition and the emotional excesses of the Italian baroque and demonstrated that architectural proportions truly concordant with French taste could be elastic and subjective. This exquisite work is profusely illustrated with six fine copper-engraved folio plates of columns, as well as 40 splendid copperplate head- and tailpieces, 23 initial letters and in-text diagrams, all by famous English engraver John Sturt (1658-1730). 4pp publisher's advertisement at rear. Some age-wear on binding with inner margin of covers darkened and corners rubbed. Gold tooling along edges partly faded. Modern endpapers. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in near fine condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
