Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail.
The Century Co,, New York: 1888 - "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," wrote Theodore Roosevelt to his friend and the illustrator of his first important work, Frederic Remington. This is the first issue of the first edition, in the original light tan buckram with green and gilt stamping. This work focusses on the period in the 1880s when Roosevelt lived and worked his ranches in the Bad Lands of the Dakota Territory, following the death of his wife Alice Lee. Roosevelt had lost both his wife and mother on the same day in 1884; he left politics for a period and built a ranch (Elk Horn) in North Dakota. While there, he wrote about frontier life and published three books, including this title. Roosevelt's environmental and conservation interests were evident in his organizing of ranchers to address issues such as over grazing, and in the formation of the Boone and Crockett Club, with the goal of preserving large game animals and their habitats. As president, Roosevelt played a large role in the formation of the National Park System. In 1906, he signed the Antiquities Act which authorized presidents to proclaim landmarks as national monuments, which had the effect of protecting about a quarter of the places currently in the National Park System. Folio, 186pp, beveled boards, all edges gilt. A bit sunned at the spine, a few marks internally, early pages, otherwise a very pleasant copy. Howes R432. OCLC: 7410498. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
