Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. With Fifty Illustrations by John Tenniel.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1872. Hardcover. Unpaginated preliminaries (Dramatis Personae; chessboard, introductory poem, contents leaf), tissue-guarded frontis, 224p., "Works by" leaf. No mention of press-run. "Wade" for wabe on p.21. 7.5x5 inch red cloth boards gilt, triple-ruled with Red Queen vignette front cover, White Queen back, small stylized device beneath spine title. All edges gilded. A sophisticated and slightly restored copy, with rims of head and tail plainly strengthened and shapely; casing edges lightly worn with minute fraying at each lower corner, touched up with added color but not overdone; mild general grime to cloth, gilt is dimmed but legible everywhere . Original matte-black endsheets are intact and appear unrestored. Pastedown bears the engraved bookplate of horticulturist Thomas Aloyisius Perry, bookplate is toned but legible. Half-title has an ownership legend in old sepia nib, one word reading "Perry." Textblock signatures are slightly out of square but are held well without significant starting. Paperstock has a little faint scattered foxing, and shows occasional mild handling soil. Tissue guard touched with mild foxing and a small corner crease. A good copy; and allowing the sophistications, a very good copy.
