The Plays of William Shakespeare, 1778, in Ten Volumes with the Corrections and Illustrations of Various Commentators; To Which are Added Notes by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens, plus a 2 volume Supplement
C.Bathurst, W.Strahan, J.F.& C. Rivington, J.Hinton, L.Davis, et al 1778 & 1780, London - 1778. Original tan calf bindings. This Ten Volume Set is complemented by the addition of the very hard to find Two Volume Supplement, which was published 2 years later in 1780, in the same tan calf bindings, with additional gilt filigree work. The 2 volume supplement is entitled "Supplement to the Edition of Shakspeare's Plays Published in 1778 By Samuel Johnson and George Steevens in Two Volumes Containing Additional Observations By Several of The Former Commentators: To Which are Subjoined The Genuine Poems of the Same Author and Seven Plays that have been Ascribed to him". Printed for C. Bathurst, W. Strahan et al. Bindings are strong & sound with just usual wear for books of this age. Volume 1 of 10 vol set has engraved frontis of Shakespeare with accompanying poem by Ben Jonson; also contains facsimile of hand-written note with Shakespeare's signature; Volume V has a fold-out engraving of Morris Dancers for K. Henry IV; the First Supplement has an engraved frontis of Henry Wriothesly, The Earl of Southampton; it also includes a fold-out entitled "The Platt of the Second Parte of the Seven Deadlie Sinns" which includes a 'dumbshow'; the Second Volume of Supplement has an engraved frontis of "The House in Stratford upon Avon in Which Shakespeare was Born". Additional engravings in other select volumes of full set. Owner inscription from 1779. Light scattered foxing. The red & gilt titles to spine are absent on several vols; varying degree of wear to spines/corners; a couple of vols have some water marks at rear; minor nicks, chips & few paper repairs. Overall an exceptionally well-preserved set. Rare and Highly Collectible.
