Samuel Johnson (1709 1784), often referred to as Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. A devout Anglican and committed Tory, he has been described as arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history. This setcomprises not only the original eleven volumes - which contain his fiction, biographies, essays, political writings and literary criticisms - but also a further four volumes - featuring his debates, letters and accounts of Abyssinia -, added two years later to expand the set to the fifteen offered here. The first edition of this collection. Complete in 15 volumes, a rare opportunity to own this set uniformly bound in its entirety. Condition: In contemporary full calf bindings with gilt detail to spines. Externally, somewhat worn to boards and extremities with some minor loss to the leather in places, most commonly to board extremities and backstrip. Most spine labels absent with 6 remaining, all with some loss. 11 joints held by cord only, 13 others strained or starting. Rear board of volume I detached but present. Internally, generally firmly bound with occasional pages loose or loosening. Spotting to endpapers and first and last fewpages of each volume, otherwiseclean and bright with light, scattered spotting in places. Damp stains and marks to rear of volume I. Overall: GOOD ONLY with GOOD interiors. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
