Nothing So Monstrous
Pynson Printers, New York 1936 - 8vo, pp. 31. Original marbled boards, lettered in black on tan cloth spine. Glassine jacket. Unopened. A fine copy in the original glassine jacket, browned and chipped with slight loss. Pen and ink drawings by Donald McKay. First separate edition. One of 370 copies, without a sponsor's or recipient's name on presentation leaf at rear. First published in 1932 as part of Steinbeck's second book, The Pastures Of Heaven -- although the epilogue to this story appears here for the first time. The publication costs of this edition were borne by a number of subscribers, among them Elmer Adler, Frederick B. Adams Jr., Ben Abramson, Edwin J. Beinecke and Howard Mott. Each were given as many copies as they'd paid for to use as Christmas gifts. A few copies are known to carry Steinbeck's printed name on the presentation leaf; unusually, this copy carries no name at all. Goldstone & Payne: A2f Goldstone & Payne: A2f
