Bound volume of extracts from the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, on 19th century explorations in the South Island of New Zealand (known at that time as "Middle Island")]
Royal Geographical Society 1832-1870, London - Bound volume of 11 reports extracted from various early issues of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. Bound in mid-twentieth century in red cloth boards. Page edges sprinkled. Spine titled in gilt: "New Zealand - 1832-64". Page dimensions: 208 x 133mm. No previous owner's signatures. All maps in very good condition. One map with a small 10mm tear to the margin. A few minor spots of foxing to some maps. Publisher's imprint line in the lower margin of the Brunner map cropped through the middle of the letters. All extracts are on New Zealand, including several on important 19th century explorations in the South Island of New Zealand, notably those of Thomas Brunner, J. Turnbull Thomson, and Julius von Haast. This volume would make a wonderful addition to any collection on 19th century New Zealand travel and history, or 19th century New Zealand cartography.The contents are: [1.] (1832) "Notices of New Zealand. Vol. XX, (344)-378 pages + 1 folding engraved map of the South Island (Middle Island), with Brunner's route hand-coloured in red (John Arrowsmith, engraver). [3.] (1852) "Observations on the Statue, Bodily Weight, Magnitude of Chest, and Physical Strength of the New Zealand Race of Men. By Dr. Arthur Saunders Thomson, 58th Regt." (87)-93 pages. [4.] (1851) "Survey of the Southern Part of the Middle Island of New Zealand by Capt. J. Lort Stokes, R.N., F.R.G.S. Communicated by the Admiralty. With Memoranda on its exploration."
