Edinburgh: Printed for John Ballantyne for Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, London, 1810. - An imitation (or parody of sorts) of Johnson's criticism of the poetry of Thomas Gray, written as if it were by Johnson himself. Soon after publication it was discovered this was the work of a professor of Greek at Glasgow, John Young (1750-1820). Boswell said it was "the most perfect imitation of Johnson." Leather bookplate of Arthur Gordon Ripley, Denver, on the front paste-down. 8vo, original gray boards and printed paper label, untrimmed. NCBEL II, 580 & 1153; cf Rothschild 2624; Courtney, page 138. Bookseller's description pasted to the front paste-down; slight foxing; boards a little worn, with some loss at the head of the spine; very good copy. Second edition; the first was published in 1783.
