The works of Shakespear in nine volumes with a glossary. Carefully printed from the Oxford Edition in Quarto, 1744.
London John Osborn 1747 - Nine volumes 12mo (13 x 8 cm). With frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare Vol 1; titl epages slightly waterstained, wormholes to Vol 3, otherwise good clean copies. Contemporary sprinkled calf with single gilt rule, spine with four raised bands, compartments decorated with gilt fleuron, red morocco label with author and volume number lettered direct, edges stained red; joints starting but otherwise a handsome set. A lovely edition of the bard's dramatic works. The first volume contains: 1. An engraved portrait of Shakespeare, probably based on the Chandos portrait painted in the early 17th century 2. Preface introducing "a true and correct Edition of Shakespear's works cleared from the corruptions with which they have hitherto abounded" 3. Preface to Pope's 1725 edition 4. Engraving of the statue of Shakespeare in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, designed by William Kent and executed by Peter Scheemakers (1740) 5. 'Some Account of the life, &c. of Mr William Shakespear. Written by Mr. Rowe' from his 1709 edition, considered the first edited edition of Shakespeare 6. Heraldic documentation of Shakespeare's coat of arms from the Office of Arms (1599) 7. 'To the memory of my beloved the Author, Mr. William Shakespear; And what he hath left us.' by Ben Jonson, taken from the preface to First Folio (1623) The ninth volume is concluded by: 'A glossary explaining the obsolete and difficult words in the plays of Shakespear' taken from Thomas Hammer's 1744 edition in six volumes, to which the book's title refers This edition of Shakespeare's works was reprinted throughout the next two decades by variant printers. Only one copy has been sold at auction according to Americana Exchange, and this was the later 1750 edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
