Chapman's Sectional Map of the Surveyed Part of Minnesota
Silas Chapman, Milwaukee 1869 - Rare sectional map of Minnesota. In 1856, Chapman published his first sectional map of Minnesota. That map, however, was relegated to the southeasternmost portion of the state. The present 1869 issue encompasses a much greater region, as far west as the Red River of the North and Dakota boundary, and as far north as Lake Ataska. Counties are named and most sectioned for development; numerous towns are shown and railroads, both existing and proposed, are depicted across the state; a large Sioux reservation is shown in the west. The map was copyrighted in 1865 and editions appeared in 1866, 1868, 1869, 1870 and 1872, each with changes to county boundaries. All are scarce. Not in Phillips, A List of Maps of America or Rumsey. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring. Folds into publisher's cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover, advertisement for Chapman on the front pastedown. Small inkstamp on pastedown. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
