PARTIALLY PRINTED DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY JAMES MADISON AS PRESIDENT, BEING THE WITNESS PORTION OF A GENERAL LAND OFFICE DOCUMENT].
Washington, D.C. November 1, 1813. - Partially printed document on vellum, completed in manuscript, measuring 2 3/4 x 8 inches. Old folds. Near fine. In a half morocco and cloth folding box, spine gilt. A nice example of James Madison's signature. The signature is found on a portion of a General Land Office document, and Madison has signed it as a witness and has "caused the Seal of the General Land Office to be hereunto affixed" (though the seal is not contained on the portion of the document present here). The document has also been signed by Edward Tiffin, Commissioner of the General Land Office. Tiffin was a prominent Ohio politician and the first Commissioner of the General Land Office, which managed allocations of federal lands.
