Photograph inscribed to Elbert Wickes, his American lecture agent.
1932 1932 - Original press photograph (190 × 240 mm), mounted, framed and glazed. Very slight fade to the inscription, but overall very good. Group photograph of Churchill, Elbert A. Wickes, his agent for his 1932 American lecture tour, and three of his Boston hosts, inscribed to Wickes: "Winston S. Churchill for Elbert A. Wickes, March 1932." In 1931, in an effort to recoup his losses from the Stock Market crash, Churchill had undertaken to make a trip to the United States and had "contracted to give forty lectures during his visit, for a guaranteed minimum fee of £10,000" (Gilbert, Churchill, V p420). Arriving on 11 December, he made his first lecture at Worcester, Mass. the following day, and then on the 13th, back in New York, Churchill was hit by a taxi while crossing Fifth Avenue, and sustained a severe scalp wound and two cracked ribs, developing pleurisy. A week-long stay in hospital was followed by two weeks of recuperation at the Waldorf-Astoria, after which he sailed for the Bahamas with Clemmie, not returning until 25 January 1932. The 10 March date at Boston's Symphony Hall was the last of the tour, but the deep scars on Churchill's forehead remain clearly visible, and writing to his publisher on his return to Britain he commented: "I am much better, but I feel I need to rest and not to drive myself so hard. You have no idea what I have been through" (p427). Wickes was the president of Alber & Wickes, a Boston-based literary and theatrical agency, which also handled the arrangements for W.B. Yeats's 1932 lecture series, and was responsible for the Abbey Theatre Players's American tours in the 30s and 40s.
