The Bridge
Black Sun Press, Paris - Paris, The Black Sun Press, 1930. Quarto. First edition, first impression. Number 134 of 200 copies on Holland Paper from a total limited edition of 284. Housed in the publisher's original silver card slipcase. Slight damage to slipcase at the top and bottom edges; minor staining to glassine wrapper. Otherwise an excellent, fresh copy. The Bridge was Crane's only attempt at a long poem before his suicide in 1932. It has been compared to Eliot's The Wasteland and is widely regarded as one of the epic poems of American literature alongside Whitman's Leaves of Grass and William Carlos Williams' Patterson. The book is notable for containing three plates by Crane's friend Walker Evans - his first published photographs. Evans went on to become one of the world's most famous photographers.
