Man and Superman. A Comedy and a Philosophy.
Westminster, Archibald Constable & Co., Ltd., 1903 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt. Contents a little shaken, hinges cracked, cloth marked, spine sunned. Very good. First Edition, First Impression. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half title page, "to Sidney & Beatrice Webb from G. Bernard Shaw. Strachur Aug. 1903". An association of great significance. The Webbs were together with Shaw the leading lights of the Fabian Society. They had met in the 1870s and remained friends and political allies for more than half a century. Man and Superman is one of Shaw's most politically motivated plays, a Shavian critique of the philosophy of Nietzsche. Signed by Beatrice Webb on the front free endpaper. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
