The Poems.
London: MacMillan & Co., 1949 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spines gilt, the author's monogram device to front boards gilt, top edges gilt. With the original glassine wrappers. Housed in the publisher's brown paper covered slipcase. A lovely set with the spines slightly faded, and with light spotting to edges and endpapers. The wrappers are split but preserved, laid in to each volume. Frontispiece portraits of Yeats to each volume, one by John Singer Sargent, one by Augustus John. First variorum edition. One of a limited edition of 375 numbered copies (this one of 350 trade copies) signed by W. B. Yeats on the limitation page. Includes the publisher's 4 page leaflet printing the title page, explaining the history of the edition, giving the contents, and printing a specimen page from the text, this one with the end of On a Picture of a Black Centaur by Edmund Dulac and the beginning of Among School Children. This edition was being prepared at the time of Yeats's death in 1940. The canny publishers hastened to prepare the limitation leaf and have the great man sign his share. The war then intervened and not until 1949 was this magnificent piece of scholarship and editing was published. It is a noteworthy member of a small band of book - the Posthumous Signed Limited Edition. Yeats of course was a constant reviser of his work which makes this definitive edition all the more important. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
