The Works of John Locke, Esq; In Three Volumes. The Contents of which follow in the next Leaf. With Alphabetical Tables
Printed for John Churchill, and Sam. Manship, London 1714 - First collected edition. Folios. Variant edition not in *ESTC*, with the date in roman numerals in all three volumes, and without the two additional pieces: "An account of the life and writings of John Locke," and, "The remains of John Locke" (*ESTC* T128627). Volume one illustrated with two engraved plates (frontispiece portrait and Locke's epitaph in Latin), all three with woodcut initials and ornaments. Contemporary full calf, stamped in blind with gold tooling. Early owner's inscription and later presentation on the front pastedowns, an ex-library set with bookplates, paper shelf labels on the rear free endpapers, and perforated stamp on the title page and one text page of each volume. The boards are worn, joints are cracked but still snug, else a good sound set, interior text pages are bright and clean. The frontispiece portrait engraved by George Vertue in 1713, and Locke's engraved epitaph are especially fine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
