Hieroglyphic Bibles: Their Origin and History. A Hitherto Unwritten Chapter of Bibliography with Facsimile Illustrations by W. A. Clouston's and a New Hieroglyphic Bible told in Stories by Frederick A. Laing.
Glasgow David Bryce and Son 1894 - Quarto. xvi, 316, 24, 24pp. First edition. This reference book on hieroglyphic Bibles, where words have been replaced by symbols, is illustrated with black & white facsimile pages. Hieroglyphic Bibles were meant to visually capture the interest and curiosity of children, leading them to a greater understanding of the text. Following Clouston's text is Frederick A. Laing's modern hieroglyphic Bible printed in color, divided into "Old Testament Stories" and "New Testament Stories." Each section has a full-page color title page, and the near-miniature leaves of the Bible are mounted, with four on each page. Bound in tan buckram stamped with the title in gilt and a pictorial border in black. Some faint, scattered foxing to contents and fore-edge, edges of boards show some light soiling, corners and spine ends slightly bumped, else a fine copy with the original blue cloth printed dust wrapper. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
