Select Mechanical Exercises: Shewing how to construct different Clocks, Orreries and Sun-Dials, on plain and easy principles.
Strachan & Cadell, London 1778 - Later work by the remarkable self-taught Astronomer and Instrument maker. Prefixed is a short autobiography. The subsequent exercises, no doubt influenced by Ferguson's popular public lectures, explain the construction and function of nine clocks, orreries and other devices (including a clock by one Mr. Franklin of Philadelphia), each complete with fold-out diagrams. Also included are a raft of logarithmic tables, statistical and material data. Frontis portrait. Bound in contemporary full calf with some marking and rubbing, recently re-set with new sewn headband. Square. gilt dentelles to board edges. Two minor inconsequential tears to pages, fold-outs are tight and complete, contents are clean with only minimal soiling. A sound, pleasing copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
