Bell's Shakspere (20 volumes)
John Bell 1785-1786, London - Sextodecimo [15 cm] Green leather. All edges gilt. Gilt rolled edges. Marbled endsheets. The majority of the volumes are in good or very good condition. The extremities are rubbed, mildly darkened, and occasionally mottled and discolored. The spines are sunned, and the corners of the covers are gently bumped. The pages at the beginning and end (including the frontispieces) are foxed. The endsheets are darkened at the edges. Several of the frontispiece tissue guards are absent. Two of the volumes have a previous owner's initials stamped in ink on the front flyleaves. Browned pages. Very sporadic foxing or damp staining on the pages. Under a dozen pages have minor contemporary markings in the margins. The text blocks of six of the volumes are cracked multiple times. Volume 1 is in fair condition only. The text block has almost completely come away from the covers. The front free endsheet of this volume is only hanging on by a thread, and there are faint erased scribbles on the flyleaves. The leather at the head of the spine of volume 2 is lightly chipped. The fore edge of the front cover of volume 4 has a discolored stain, that measures 3 and 1/2 inches long by 3/4 " wide. The pages at the beginning of volumes 7 and 19 are partially detached. The front flyleaf and frontispiece page of volume 20 are completely detached, but present. Printed Complete from the Text of Sam. Johnson and Geo. Steevens, and revised from the last editions. With steel engraved illustrations. From the text - "This arrangement of Shakspere's Plays is made with a view to their respective merits after an enthusiastic perusal of them all.- The first five volumes contain the most wonderful of the Author's productions: the ensuing five volumes, though inferior to the first, would have ensured him immortality. There appears sufficient reason for bringing together in the third Class those Plays which relate to English History." [Attributes: Hard Cover]
