A light from Christ leading unto Christ by the star of his word, or, The rich jewel of Christian divinity: practically explained in the principles enlightening the children of God how to meet his ordinances and by strength from.
Printed for John Wright, London 1646 - Further information: by Immanuel Bourn of Ashover in the county of Derby, now preacher of the Gospel to the congregation in Sepulchres C.L. This book was printed in the middle of the Civil War Years. In 1642, on the outbreak of the English Civil war, Bourne's open partisanship with the Presbyterians compelled him to leave Ashhover for London. There he was appointed preacher at St. Sepulchre's Church, and about 1656 he became rector of Waltham-on-the-Wolds, Leicestershire, where he engaged in controversy with the Quakers and Anabaptists. The book presents an important source of information about true catechetical tradition. Bourn begins by listing the familiar figures: Abraham is lauded for instructing and catechizing 'His Household' as are Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah.later he surprises us by introducing valid tradition. He mentions Theophilus; Apollo and St. Cyprian as well as Teacher's such as Pantenus Origen, Clemens and Alexandrinus. Further catechisms are alluded to. The book has been professionally rebound using early contemporary leather boards, with spine suitably laid down, and reinforced by using leather joint supports. This now presents a very tightly bound and excellent complete copy; title page a bit dulled, tiny hole to centre, barely noticeable, thereafter pages are really excellent. An Uncommon book on the open market, one originally published during, what was probably the most turbulent years of English History. [56], 687 p. Includes bibliographic references. OFFERS GIVEN CONSIDERATION. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
