The National Gallery of Pictures by the Great Masters presented by Individuals or purchased by Grant of Parliament - complete in 2 finely bound volumes
Jones & Co, London 1840 - A superbly bound, complete 2-volume set of a work which was issued in parts to subscribers. The work is not dated but the RLIN attributes it to 1840, which ties in with the frontispiece engraving of The New National Gallery, which was built 1832-38. The magnificent 19th century binding of half navy leather and marbled boards, with rich gilt ornamentation and red title panels on the spines is still very bright and in very good+ condition. Most unusually for a period binding, there is no cracking whatsoever of both the outer and inner hinges. Page edges marbled. Silk page markers. Small 19th Century bookseller's label on front end paper, of Henry Lancaster, 23 Broad Street, Bristol. 114 excellent tissue-guarded, full-page engravings plus engraved title pages. Small 19th Century monogram on front blank end paper. The unpaginated text is in very good, tight condition, with just a little light occasional foxing and light age-browning chiefly confined to the tissue guards, the fine plates remaining in overall very good order. Size approx 275 x 220mm and the thickness of the 2 volumes together is approx 66mm. A heavy book which will require extra postage and insurance (above the ABE base rate) to most destinations. See photographs attached. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
