The Posthumous Papers of The Pickwick Club
London - Chapman and Hall 1837 - A first edition, early issue, of The Posthumous Papers of The Pickwick Club, commonly known as The Pickwick Papers. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and decoration. Bound from the Parts. With Forty-Three Plates. This edition has two 'Chapter III' headers. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, commonly known as The Pickwick Papers, was the first novel by Charles Dickens. Written for publication as a serial, The Pickwick Papers is a sequence of loosely-related adventures. Its main literary value and appeal is formed by its numerous memorable characters. Each character in The Pickwick Papers, as in many other Dickens novels, is drawn comically, often with exaggerated personalities. Condition: The binding is firm. The boards are held by the cords only, and could possibly detach in the post, even after careful packaging. Page 195 is detached. There is significant wear to the extremities, including significantbumping and rubbing, with the spine leatherdetached. Internally the pages have slight browning with intermittent scattered spots, prominent to the plates. Several of the page edgeshave been reinforced. Pages 191 to195 have several small closed tears. Overall the condition is fair only. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
