Habitants de Californie, Pl. VII
First Edition: Paris, Firmin Didot 1822 - Louis Choris (1795-1828) Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde First Edition: Paris, Firmin Didot, 1822 Lithograph with original hand coloring in superb condition, save some mino. Sheet size: 10” x 16 1/4” This portrait the inhabitants of California, recalls the voyage of the Rurik, 1815-1818, commanded by the Russian Otto von Kotzbue, and the expedition’s search for the Northwest Passage, entering the Pacific via the Horn and returning to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. Choris, the official artist on the expedition, was invited by the St. Petersberg Academy to accompany Kotzbue and the present work represents a fine cross section of the places that the expedition visited: it includes views of Teneriffe, Brazil, Chile, the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Kamchatka, Philippines, the Cape of Good Hope and Saint Helena. Choris’ magnificent work offers important pictorial representations of the people, landscape, and artifacts of the then mysterious islands of the Pacific, California, Alaska, the northwest coast of America, and other far-off lands. This work has great American interest because of its lithographs and its account of Hawaii, California, the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Aleutians, St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, and Kotzebue Island in Alaska. The lithographs are of all aspects of native life and culture. After the voyage of the Rurik, Choris went to Paris to continue work for Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde. Seized by an irresistible craving for adventure, Choris left France in 1827 for South America. He met his end when he was murdered by robbers on March 22, 1828, en route to Vera Cruz, Mexico.
