Promenade autour du monde, pendant les annees 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820, sur les corvettes du Roi L´Uranie et la Physicinne, commandees par M. Freycinet [Atlas only]
1822 - The atlas by the official artist to Freycinet´s expedition to the Pacific. 1822. Paris. Leblanc. In folio (365 mm x 275 mm). 2 ff. + 25 lithographed plates & a map of the expedition. Unbound. Handsome copy, entirely uncut, one plate with unobtrusive tear, else a very clean and crisp copy. First edition. A splendid atlas made by the official artist of the expedition, narrating a French scientific expedition to the Pacific under Captain Freycinet. Freycinet´s was the first post-Napoleonic French circumnavigation; the expedition took them to Hawai, Maui, Australia, Brazil (particularly Rio de Janeiro) and went through Timor, Mironesia, Malouines, Guam, the Mariana´s, and other numerous places. Arago (1790 – 1855) was a remarkable artist and literate; in 1817-1820 he joined Freycinet´s scientific expedition in the quality of official draughtsman; the expedition began onboard of the Corvette L´Uranie, this vessel would wreck and a new one would be bought and re-christened Physicienne. The drawings produced by Arago during this period are to be regarded as the most realistic renditions of native peoples and scenery of the regions visited. Borba de Moraes I, 44. Ferguson, 850. Sabin 1867.
