London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1883 - Small octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt and black, back cover blocked in blind, chocolate brown endpapers, binder's ticket of W. Bone & Son. Spine very lightly sunned, corners lightly bumped, front free endpaper skilfully supplied, still a very good copy. First one-volume edition, presentation copy to Gabriel Sarrazin, with Hardy's autograph inscription on the half-title: "To Gabriel Sarrazin, with the best wishes of the author, Thomas Hardy." Sarrazin was an influential Parisian gentleman of letters, translator of Shelley and author of Po├Ętes Modernes en Angleterre. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
