Endgrain. Contemporary Wood Engraving in North America. Introductory Essays by Patricia Ainslie & Paul Ritscher.
Crispin & Jan Elsted at Barbarian Press, Mission, British Columbia, Canada. Number 14 of 50 (XIV/L) special copies, signed by Crispin & Jan Elsted, and with a tipped-in frontispiece woodengraving, signed and numbered by Rosemary Kilbourn; (which was made specially for this book). 1994 - Size of full leather binding: 7 5/8 in. x 10 5/8 in., unpaginated, using the ivory paper for the texts, and white wove paper for the wood engravings and section pages. Illustrated with 49 plates, printed from the blocks, for the Canadian section, and 72 plates, also printed from the blocks, for the American section + signed printer's leaf + numbered colophon + inserted errata slip. A total of 121 wood engravings, plus the special signed frontispiece. One of the wood engravings is printed in red and black (Julius Hubler), the others in black on white. Bound in full, textured-grain dark blue leather with four raised bands on the spine, and a gilt-lettered title with device, with the Ted Staunton title page block design, blindstamped on the front cover. Preserved in a sturdy, and finely constructed, drop-back back box, which features a dark blue leather spine and sides, with the gilt-lettered title repeated, and using the patterned paper designed by John DePol on the sides (also used as the endpapers for the book), with dark blue and white lining cloth inside the box. Both the book and the box are in fine condition. This copy also contains: the Barbarian Press printed bookmark, which has this handwritten, signed message on the reverse: This book has been inspected by Jan Elsted.; a copy of the [4]pp. printed prospectus for Endgrain, the unused, printed order form in its printed envelope, and a one page, printed slip regarding the engravers (then) accepting commissions to do engraving work. This is one of the finest productions of the Barbarian Press.
