There is some minor rubbing on the spine edges and the back side of the book. There is light staining on the back outside cover of the book. All pages are in tact. There is no tearing or foxing. The book is altogether, tight. The painting is of hunters on horse pursuing a fox, which is visible on the bottom edge. Look at the pictures to see this amazing book! These panoramamc fore edge paintings are rare and sought after and do not come up often for sale In the Middle Ages artists began decorating books by painting the edges of the closed book. In the early 16th century, the British refined the art and made it a specialty. The technique involves clamping the book in a vice, beveling the edges of the pages, and with a scalpel-like instrument, scribing the outline of a scene. Color pigment is then applied to the paper with a minuscule palette knife. When dry, the book is closed and gold leaf is applied to the ends and front edge (fore edge) thus concealing the painting. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
