Marcel Duchamp, Pasadena Art Museum: A Retrospective Exhibition
Pasadena Art Museum, Pasadena, CA 1963 - [56] pp., illus. (part mounted, part col.), facsim., port.; 28 cm. Edition of 2000 copies. Exhibition held October 8 through November 3, 1963. Firm binding, clean inside copy. The mylar, plastic-covering around the card wrappers is badly chipped, though most of the red lettering is intact. It's hard overestimate the importance of this exhibition, Duchamp's first retrospective. Organized by Walter Hopps, at the shortlived Pasadena Art Museum, in L.A., it helped to ignite a wave of Neo-Dada and the "discovery" of Duchamp by a new generation of artists (associated with everything from Happenings to Fluxus to Conceptual Art). Although he lived in Paris and New York, Duchamp didn't have the full blessing of Alfred H. Barr at MoMA (who was not a fan of Dada or Surrealism), so this historic retrospective was held in a small, relatively-unknown art museum in California. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
