Boards now protected by a new Brodart Archival Mylar Cover. Boards are purple-red with designs embossed on front board; spine is faded. Color of boards has faded, esp. around the edges and board/spine edges and corners are worn. Pages are clean, unmarked (no marks or names found), fairly bright, tightly bound (except for front flyleaf and back page where their attachments to spine have been well-repaired by paper mending tape) and sharp cornered. Contains 122 pages of text followed by a 32-page catalogue of other John Murray publications of the time. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. Several editions of this book were reported to have been published in 1860, but with the second or later edition clearly marked on the title page; however this is a scarce copy of the FIRST Edition, with only the date of 1860 at the bottom of the title page. Contents include eight chapters, the first section of each is (partial subjects list): The Approach to the Lebanon * Ebteddin, the Palace of the Emir Beschir * Family of the Jumblatts and Castle of Maktara * Composition of Druse People * Hakem Bemrillah, the Founder of the Druse Faith * Traces of Ancient Superstitions in the Druse Faith * The Yezidis of Mesopotamia * Present Condition of the Turkish Empire. "In 1853, Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert Carnarvon (who became the 4th Earl of Carnarvon) after being educated at Eaton and Oxford, made a tour with his friend Lord of Sandon to Syria and Asia Minor. He traveled to Beirut, Deir el Kamar and Moukhtara in the Shouf mountains. He was interested in the Druze community, and he published this interesting volume of his recollections, with notes on the Druze's faith. He also discusses the Yezidi faith and suggests ways for the British authorities to deal with both." .
